Have you been feeling like there’s never enough in your bank account lately? Maybe the costs for your basic needs keep going up, or you’ve had some unexpected expenses. You might have debt or other financial burdens that keep you up at night. If that’s you, you’re not alone.
If you’re struggling financially, know that God is with you and wants to provide you with peace. And in addition to than that, He wants to help you make wise financial decisions that set you up for long-term success. Below you’ll find five prayers inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus. But first, we’ll explore why God cares about your financial situation.
God Is Able to Bless Us Financially
Look what this letter from the Apostle Paul in the Bible says:
… God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV
God loves to bless people. Depending on your Bible translation, “bless,” “blessing,” and “blessed” appear hundreds of times. But what does it mean to be blessed?
What Does It Mean to Be Blessed?
In the Bible, blessing is a way of talking about the good gifts God provides. Sometimes, God blesses people directly through encouraging words, promising a better future, providing guidance, or meeting a physical need like food or being able to pay the bills.
Blessing isn’t something we achieve. Instead, it’s a gift we get to accept. All of us experience blessings from God every day.
Every time we experience the goodness of the world around us, we experience God’s gift or His blessing. We didn’t earn the ability to enjoy food, or work hard to feel awe as we witnessed a beautiful sunset. Instead, we simply receive those experiences as a gift from God.
Does God Provide Financial Blessings?
There are a few stories in the Bible where people receive financial blessings. One example is in 2 Kings 4. The biblical author wrote about a widow lacks the financial resources to pay back her deceased husband’s debts. Now she’s desperate. If she doesn’t receive a financial miracle soon, the creditor could take her sons away.
She calls on a prophet, Elisha, for help. He asks her if she has anything of value to sell—but all she has is one small jar of oil. So, through Elisha, God performs a miracle. The oil is multiplied, and she’s able to sell enough oil to pay back the debt. There’s even enough left over that she can sell to meet the needs of her family.
Notice how the miracle provided the finances to become debt-free, plus extra to provide basic needs for her family. This mirrors the verse at the top of this article, 1 Corinthians 9:8, which tells us that God can bless us with what we need, and everything extra can go toward doing good.
How Does Jesus Talk About Financial Blessing?
Jesus had a lot to say about money, finances, and generosity. How He talked about money varied based on His audience. To people with a lot of resources, He spoke of the dangers of greed and invited people to use their finances to bless others.
For people experiencing financial difficulty, He spoke of God’s ability to provide. Here’s an example:
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? …
So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:25-27, 31-33 NIV
What is Jesus saying? God blesses creatures in nature with what is required for each day, and He can provide for your needs, too.
What Is a Financial Blessing?
Let’s go back to 2 Corinthians 9:8.
God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
God wants to provide us with what we need. But He’s also able to give us more than we need. And what do we do with the leftovers? We abound in every good work. How? By using it to provide for others’ needs.
God is able to bless us with what we need. Why? Because God loves us. And if God blesses us with more than we need, then we have a responsibility to be a blessing to others. How? By being generous. We give to our local church, a local non-profit, or a neighbor in need.
