Finding a realtor and attending showings gets your imagination running. Can I picture myself living here? How would my life be different? How much would it cost to knock down that wall and replace the old carpets with hardwood flooring?
And then the moment when your offer on a house is accepted? And then the moment when you close? After weeks (or months … or years …) of searching, it can feel as if all of your hard work has finally paid off.
But—
Buying a house is also kind of the worst.
There’s so much uncertainty. There’s so much money involved. There’s so much commitment involved.
Fluctuating interest rates, overpriced houses, and prickly sellers can make you question whether you should be thinking about buying a house at all.

So, how can you navigate the ups and downs of buying a house with patience and grace? This is a question I asked myself repeatedly while searching for my first house last year. I spent nine months going to showings and open houses and had my fair share of rejected offers before I finally found the house I bought.
In the end, it came down to lots of prayer—connecting with God as I dreamed about the future, stepped into houses for the first time, questioned how much money to offer, and ultimately signed the paperwork on closing day. Every step of the way, He gave me the wisdom and peace I needed to continue my house-buying journey.

God Cares About Where You Live
Now, you might be thinking, “Talk to God? About buying a house? Is this something He really cares about?”
The answers to those questions are, in order, “yes,” “yes,” and “yes.”
There are so many different reasons you might be in the market for a house. Maybe you’ve been living with your parents, and you’re ready to live on your own. Maybe you’ve been renting for years, and a mortgage payment offers more financial security than rising rent prices (this was my reason!). Maybe your family is growing, and you need more room.
God cares about you, and that means He cares about the things you care about.
No matter the reason, God cares about you, and that means He cares about the things you care about. He wants you to talk to Him about those things. He wants to give you wisdom and peace as you continue on the road ahead.
Now, an important note: Just because God cares about the things you care about doesn’t mean He’ll always give you what you want. There are lots of reasons why now might not be the best time to buy a house. Maybe it wouldn’t be a financially wise decision. Maybe the housing market isn’t in a good place. Maybe the right house won’t go on the market for another six months.
Even in these situations, prayer is still the right thing to do. God’s wisdom and peace can give you clarity about whether now is the right time to take this major step, or if it would be good to wait.

Would You give me wisdom and peace throughout this entire process, and help me trust that You’ll lead me to a good home I can use for Your glory? In Jesus’ name, amen.

I’d love to find someone who’s a lot like You—a knowledgeable, caring guide who understands what I’m looking for and who can make up for any blind spots I might have.
