Need God’s Help? Here’s How to Ask When You’re Overwhelmed

Sam Larrabee • 7 minutes

We all hit moments where our own strength just isn’t enough. Life gets heavy, bills pile up, relationships feel strained, your body doesn’t cooperate, or the future looks uncertain. That’s where God’s help comes in.

The Bible describes God as a strong refuge, always ready to meet you in whatever way you need Him today.

Sometimes His help looks like peace when everything around you is chaotic. Other times it looks like a friend showing up in person or over the phone when you need them—or the courage to keep going when you feel like giving up.

God’s help isn’t about skipping the hard stuff. It’s about not facing it alone.

God’s help isn’t about skipping the hard stuff. It’s about not facing it alone. And when you pray, it’s a reminder that the One who created the entire universe also cares about what’s happening in your life today.

Where We Most Often Ask for Help

Have you ever prayed simply because you didn’t know what else to do? That’s exactly where God meets us.

Sometimes we pray about the huge things like healing, provision, or safety. Other times, we pray about the stress of work, parenting, or feelings of loneliness. God cares about all of it.

The Bible is full of people who cried out to God. Their stories show us what God’s help can look like in real life, right now.

5 Biblical Examples of God’s Help

As you explore these stories, remember that the point isn’t to show us a menu of what God will do for anyone who asks. Instead, they show us what God is like, how God hears us, and how He shows His care.

1. Hannah: God Hears Honest Prayers

Hannah longed for a child, but year after year, her prayers went unanswered:

In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 1 Samuel 1:10 NIV

But God heard her prayer, and in time, she gave birth to Samuel, who would become one of Israel’s greatest prophets.

Hannah’s story shows us that even when all we can bring Him is our honest pain, God is present and ready to listen.

2. David: Courage to Face What Feels Too Big

David stood in front of a seemingly impossible-to-defeat enemy, Goliath, with nothing but a sling and stones in hand. People thought he was crazy, naive, or had a death wish, but David trusted that God’s strength would be enough:

“The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” … 1 Samuel 17:37 NIV

David’s big win shows us that God’s help often looks like the courage to face problems that feel far bigger than we are.

3. Daniel: Protection in the Middle of Danger

Daniel was thrown into a den of lions because he would not stop praying to God. It looked like his end was near, but God protected him. In the morning, when the king came to the den, Daniel gave this report:

“My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me …” Daniel 6:22 NIV

Daniel’s story shows us that God’s help can bring protection in the middle of danger, not just a way out of it.

4. The Bleeding Woman: Healing Through Faith

For twelve years, a woman suffered from constant bleeding. She spent all her money on doctors who tried to help, but had no cure. In a desperate moment, she reached out and touched the edge of Jesus’ cloak, hoping for divine healing:

She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Matthew 9:21 NIV

Her story shows us that even a small step of faith can open the door to God’s help.

5. Paul: Endurance When Things Don’t Change

Paul begged God to take away what he called a “thorn in the flesh,” something that caused him significant personal struggle.

Instead of removing it, God gave Paul grace and strength to endure:

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” … 2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV

Paul’s experience shows us that sometimes God doesn’t provide the outcome we hoped for, but He does provide His strength.

How to Ask God for Help

Have you ever felt stuck, not knowing how to pray? Or wondered if asking God for help even makes a difference? You’re definitely not alone. Thankfully, Scripture is full of people who brought their needs to God in raw, personal ways. We can see from their examples that it does make a difference—and we can learn how to do it.

Here’s some simple guidance for how to ask God for help. This isn’t a secret, super spiritual formula. Instead, it’s a way to get started as you pray for God’s help. You’ll also find an example prayer for God’s help below.

1. Remember Who You’re Talking To

Prayer isn’t sending words into the air. You’re speaking to a God who knows you, loves you, and wants to help you. So be honest—don’t feel like you need super spiritual language or to hit a certain word count.

2. Be Specific

“God, help me” is a totally legitimate prayer, but specific prayers help you recognize God’s answers when they come.

So what do you need today? Hope for the future? Freedom from fear? Patience as you wait? Or relief in the middle of suffering? No matter what it is, name it.

3. Be Persistent

There’s a famous story Jesus told about a persistent woman who kept bringing her request to a judge. Over time, she wore the judge down and received what she asked for. Jesus used this story to encourage us to persistently pray for God’s help.

4. Be Patient

Have you ever prayed for something and felt like God was silent? We trust God, but it’s natural to wonder why God wouldn’t answer as we hoped, when we hoped He would.

Faith means believing God hears you and will answer in the way that’s best, even if the timing is different than you expected. So don’t stop praying. Keep seeking His help with whatever you need.

A Prayer for God’s Help

God, the weight of what I’m carrying feels heavier than I can handle on my own. I need Your strength, wisdom, and peace today. Please guide me and show me the best next step. Calm my anxious thoughts and remind me that I’m not alone. Thank You for hearing me and caring about every detail of my life. I trust that You’re at work, even when I can’t see it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Essential Reminders as You Ask God for Help

God wants to hear your prayers and wants to help. But let’s be clear—God doesn’t promise a pain-free life, and doesn’t call us to pursue a pain-free life, either.

The way of Jesus is a path of wholeness. A key element of that is sacrificial, loving care for others.

Jesus promises us that we’ll have trouble in the world, too. And those troubles or trials have the potential to help us become more empathetic, wise, and able to show God’s love to others.

The stories of Jesus show us that challenge isn’t a sign of God’s anger, vengeance, or ignorance. So don’t let waiting or silence lead you to believe that God’s mad at you or has forgotten you.
