How to Share Jesus at Work (Without Getting a Call From HR)

Ian Riley • 6 minutes

The first time I tried sharing my faith was a humbling experience. It all started with one question asked by a group of friends:

Hey, man! Do you want to go share your faith with us tonight?

My brain scrambled for a way out:

  • “I have a big final tomorrow, so I really need to study. Maybe next time!” (Initiate plan to avoid these guys so they never ask me again.)
  • “Wow, thank you for asking. I’ve actually never done that—can you coach me before we go?”
  • “My dog ate my homework. Or my cat. One of the two. Can’t make it!”

But before I could deliver one of my brilliant excuses, my mouth betrayed me and blurted out, “Sure!”

My First Step Into Sharing My Faith

Sharing my faith isn’t about having the perfect words—it’s about showing up and trusting God.

That night was awkward, nerve-wracking, and completely life-changing. We prayed, stumbled through conversations with other people, and encouraged each other. Eventually, I learned that sharing my faith isn’t about having the perfect words—it’s about showing up and trusting God.

A few years later, I found myself in a very different environment: the workplace. This setting came with its own set of challenges and opportunities.

That’s what this article is about. Not street evangelism or handing out tracts, but how to naturally and respectfully share Jesus with the people you work with every day.

No HR violations. No awkward speeches. Just real conversations, rooted in love and led by the Spirit.

3 Ways to Share Jesus at Work

You don’t need a pamphlet, a theology degree, or a perfect understanding of the New Testament to share about Jesus. All you need is your faith and a few intentional minutes with a friend. The fact that you’re here, seeking guidance, already shows your heart is in the right place—and I believe God will use that to bring hope to your workplace.

1. Start With Prayer

My first encouragement to you is to start your day with prayer. You may prefer to pray in the car before you walk into the office. If you’re like me, you might have a cup of coffee at your desk while you pray. The important thing is that you take time to dedicate your day to God.

Ask Him for:

  • Opportunities to share your faith
  • Boldness to step into those opportunities
  • Wisdom in your conversations
  • Chances to show Christ-like love

A simple prayer you can pray to kick off your workday:

Lord, thank You for my job. Thank You for provision and for my coworkers. I give You my work and my efforts today. I offer You all of my interactions with my team members and friends. Bless them and draw them closer to You. Help me find opportunities to share Your kindness with others. I pray for moments to share about my church, my LifeGroup, and my faith. Guide me to be bold and to take advantage of moments to encourage my teammates. In Jesus’ name, amen.

2. Build Real Relationships

The best and most natural way to share about your faith is through relationships. Which two or three coworkers have you built the strongest relationships with? Maybe it’s been through discussing sports, movies, hobbies, or other common interests—a great place to start!

Maybe you’re new to the office, or you’ve had a hard time making friends. If so, check out this article for tips on finding the friendships you need: 5 Ways to Build Lasting Friendships.

If you’re looking to avoid a call from HR, I would advise against sharing your faith by starting with, “Hi! I’m [insert your name here], and I’m a Christian. You should come to church with me!”

That’s a fast track to an HR meeting, and you may have just made that coworker put in their two weeks’ notice. But when you share your faith with someone who already knows and trusts you, your words will be received with more openness and respect.

So, who are those two to three office friends you’re thinking of? Keep them in mind for this next step.

3. Use Simple Questions and Purposeful Responses

Sharing about Jesus doesn’t have to be complicated. You can keep your pocket Bible in your desk drawer for this. When I’ve shared my faith with friends, our conversations have been most effective when I keep things natural by using simple questions and purposeful responses.

Simple Questions

Start with questions like,

“Hey, [fill in coworker’s name]. What did you do this weekend?

If they ask you the same, you have an opportunity—but not to give a point-by-point retelling of this weekend’s sermon. Instead, it’s an opportunity to prayerfully bring faith into the conversation.

Questions and conversations like these often come and go without us acknowledging that there was an opportunity to share about our faith or church.

Purposeful Responses

This leads us to our next strategy: offering purposeful responses. This moment is what we prayed for earlier!

There are plenty of ways we can share our faith in this interaction. Here are some ways you could respond:

  • “That sounds fun! We went to church and watched the game after lunch!”
  • “We had a relaxed weekend and went to our church. How about you?”
  • “Saturday night was our small group night. You’re welcome to come, if you’re ever interested!”

These responses don’t break down the implications of the Trinity or attempt to unpack what sin is. These responses introduce Christianity and faith into your conversations without being intrusive. While some of your friends won’t ask follow-up questions, others may, which would give you the opportunity to share more about your faith and church.

You can’t control how every faith conversation will go, and some might get awkward. But you can control the intentionality with which you share your faith. And when sharing feels difficult, it’s an opportunity to lean into God for courage and confidence.

Pro tip: If your church has invite cards, keep them ready in case you feel led or your friend shows interest!

Final Encouragement

Simple questions and purposeful responses can transform everyday conversations into meaningful moments. By using simple questions and purposeful responses to create special moments with your friends and coworkers, you can naturally invite them to church, your small group, or a local service opportunity.

You may even have the opportunity to share why you go to church, or why you would give up one night a week and spend it with your small group.

Keep looking for opportunities to share hope, raise awareness, and show care toward the people in your workplace. A great way to start is regular prayer for your workday, coworkers, and workplace. You can find example prayers below to help you get started.
