Stewardship, in its simplest meaning, is taking care of the things we’ve been given. As Christians, stewardship is more than just management. Being a good steward means taking care of our resources, like money and time, in a way that honors God and serves others.
We can see the principle of stewardship in Scripture from the very first page. In Genesis 1:26-29 NIV, God created the heavens, the earth, and everything in between. When God created the man and the woman, He intentionally formed them in His image, and then made them responsible for caring for the world.
So if we’ve been called to rule over the resources in our lives, why is it easy to feel like our resources are ruling over us? Perhaps it’s because we haven’t learned exactly why it’s important for us to use these tools, like money and time, in a way that honors God and serves others.
We explored this tension—and so many others that come with talking about and managing our resources—in Season 7 of the You’ve Heard It Said podcast. We’re talking about why it’s important for us to manage our resources well, biblical tensions when it comes to how we’re managing them, and practical next steps for everyone.
We’ll also acknowledge the importance of empathy and compassion, instead of condemnation and comparison. Everyone is going to be at a different place in this process, and we believe God cares way more about our hearts as we’re making these changes than about the changes themselves.
