A lot of Christian advice sounds way better when you’re not the one suffering. Stuff like:

  • “Everything happens for a reason.”
  • “God’s timing is perfect.”
  • “Just have faith.”

Maybe all of those statements contain some truth. But when you’re overwhelmed, they don’t always help. In fact, they might make you want to throw something.

So let’s skip the clichés for a minute.

My guess is that you’re exhausted from dealing with one setback after another. You know you should pray, but you’re not sure what to say. Or maybe you’ve been praying for a while and haven’t seen much change, which makes it harder to keep praying.

We’ll talk about those feelings in a minute. But first, let’s pray.

A Prayer for When You Feel Defeated

Dear God, I’m tired, discouraged, and running out of hope. I don’t understand what You’re doing, and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do next.

Please give me strength for today. Comfort me in my pain, help me trust You with what I can’t control, and remind me that You haven’t left me.

Holy Spirit, pray for me when I don’t have the words. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Why Do I Feel Defeated if God Loves Me?

Have you ever been to a sporting event where one team was losing by a lot? If so, you probably saw people start to leave before the end of the game. Why? Because what’s the point of sticking around when you already know how it’s going to end?

You might be feeling like your dream, relationship, or life plan is over. Maybe it’s because of a setback, a tragedy that wasn’t your fault, or a sin that was your fault. Whatever it was, it feels like game over.

And that’s how a lot of people in the Bible felt too.

  • Moses got so overwhelmed leading God’s people that he basically told God, “I can’t do this anymore.”
  • Naomi lost her husband, lost her sons, and came home so bitter she asked people to stop calling her Naomi.
  • Elijah had just experienced one of the biggest victories of his life, then immediately crashed so hard he asked God to let him die.
  • Even Jesus prayed in deep anguish before His crucifixion.

The Bible doesn’t claim that faith in God leads to a pain-free life. So your situation isn’t a sign that your faith is broken, fake, or compromised. It’s also not a sign that God’s mad at you.

We feel defeated because the life we want for ourselves and others feels impossible to reach. The people above experienced that firsthand. The reason I bring them up is that their stories didn’t end when they wanted to quit.

Here are two things I notice about all of them:

  • God didn’t give them a quick escape. Their circumstances didn’t suddenly improve the moment they cried out for help.
  • Their lowest moment wasn’t the end of their story. God continued working in and through their lives, even when they couldn’t see it.

I wish I could tell you prayer always changes things right away. It doesn’t. But it does keep us connected to God, and that’s exactly what we need to keep going another day.

Here are three prayers for when you feel like giving up, along with a short Scripture passage to pair with each. Pick one, and let it start your time with God.

A Prayer for Hopelessness

Dear God, right now, it feels like nothing’s going my way, and I’m sick of it. I want to believe things will get better, but I just don’t think they will. Please keep reminding me that You are still with me and still at work, even when I can’t see it. Give me enough hope for today and help me trust You with tomorrow. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer for When You Feel Like Giving Up

Heavenly Father, I’m really tired, and I don’t know how much strength I have left. Please give me the courage to share my struggles with others. Remind me of Your love and continued purpose for my life. Please give me relief, and please help me take the next step instead of giving up. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.

A Prayer for Despair

Jesus, I’m overwhelmed, worn out, and struggling to see any way forward. I don’t have answers, and I don’t know how much strength I have left. Please remind me that You’re always close by. Give me the strength I need for today and remind me that You’re still with me, even when I can’t feel it. In Your name I pray, amen.

One Last Thought

Despair tells us that today is how the rest of our lives will feel, but that’s rarely true. 

Moses, Naomi, Elijah, and countless others reached moments where they thought they were finished. They weren’t. Your circumstances may not change overnight. But this chapter of your story isn’t the whole story.

When you feel hopeless, remember Hebrews 13:5 in which God says, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Keep talking to God. He’s close and He cares.
