Robby Doland is a photographer at Life.Church who has been on staff for two years but first started attending Life.Church in 2001. His wife is a professional photographer as well, and they love getting to create together. He has two wonderful little girls, Violet & Mila who are often the subject of their photography. Today, we’re talking with Robby about Jeremiah 17:7-8, and how it inspired him to create a piece of art using his photography.
But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8 NIV
Q: Why did you choose Jeremiah 17:7-8?
A: The phrase “whose confidence is in Him” has become like a mantra for me. Confidence in God is beautiful. You can see it in someone. But putting your trust in the Lord is not always easy, so I need the constant reminder.
Q: Tell us about a time in your life when you had to trust God.
A: I am a very logical person, and I usually think I can find a solution to anything if I am given enough time. However, there have been many times in my life when I saw no way out.
One of those times was when I was living in California. Through my poor decisions, I got mixed up with the wrong people. One night, I packed everything I could fit in my car and drove to Oklahoma to live with my aunt. That’s what led to me finding Life.Church and finding a place where I truly felt I could come as I was.
As hard as those times were, I am thankful for them. God has a plan for us. He uses the hard times to help teach us that we need Him and we can’t do everything on our own. But if we choose to include God in even the small things, we get to see what is truly possible. The more we trust in God, the more our confidence will grow—not only in Him, but also in what we are capable of with Him.
Q: How do you relate with Jesus through art?
A: Our God is the Creator. We can see His creativity all around us. I like to think of photography as capturing small parts of God’s creation. Taking photos of landscapes, animals, nature, and especially people are great examples of this. Sharing those photos is sharing His creativity and the beauty He created.
Q: What do you want people to think or do when they see this specific piece?
A: To remember we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. And His strength working through us is our best source of true, lasting confidence.
